TEEN LIBRARIAN UNDERWOOD NAMED FRESH FACE IN KENTUCKY LIBRARIES
Teen Librarian Katie Underwood of the Marshall County Public Library has been honored by the Kentucky Public Library Association (KPLA) as one of the Fresh Faces of 2025. The Fresh Faces program highlights the contributions of public library staff throughout Kentucky and encourages idea-sharing among regions, specialties, and library sizes.
Each year, eight KPLA members are selected – two from each KDLA region – whose ideas and efforts are moving their libraries into the future. KPLA members of any age who have been in their current position (full or part-time, certified, or uncertified) in a public library for five years or fewer are eligible.
Since stepping into the role of Teen Librarian in August 2024, Katie Underwood has been a transformative force at the library. Her boundless energy, creativity, and genuine warmth have not only grown teen programming but have also created a welcoming and engaging space for younger patrons.
Prior to becoming the Teen Librarian, Underwood was a Children’s Assistant, where she quickly became a beloved presence for children and their parents alike. Her positive attitude and ability to connect deeply with patrons of all ages left an indelible mark on the children’s department. When the opportunity arose to lead the teen program, Underwood embraced it with enthusiasm, successfully expanding its reach and fostering meaningful relationships with our teen community.
Katie’s dedication to enhancing the library experience goes beyond in-person interactions – she has also become a social media sensation. Her creative and entertaining TikTok videos, including a wildly popular speed tour of the library with over 325,000 views, have brought the library into the digital spotlight, attracting an enthusiastic online following. Her willingness to try new and fun approaches exemplifies her innovative spirit and commitment to making the library a dynamic and exciting place for everyone.
“Katie brings joy wherever she goes,” said Library Director Tammy Blackwell. “Whether she’s helping a young patron find their next favorite book, building relationships with teens, or brainstorming the next viral video, her impact is undeniable. Her work embodies the library’s mission to inspire and connect with the community, making her the perfect candidate for Fresh Faces recognition.”
