May 10, 2013 - Job Seekers Get Advice From Local Experts

job seekers photo. CALVERT CITY, KY – Local employers and workforce experts came together at the Marshall County Public Library @Calvert City on Thursday, May 9, to discuss the ins and outs of landing a job.

"When writing a resume, filling out an application, or giving an interview, be honest and be yourself," said Jenny Lee, Human Resources Manager for the Marshall County Hospital. "You might think you're making yourself look better and more employable, but falsifying information is a guaranteed way to not get hired."

Lee served on a panel along with Lori Jones of Cracker Barrel, David Sorrels from the Office of Employment and Training, Vicky Bloodworth from the Marshall County Adult Learning Center, and Bob Orr, a former manufacturing owner. The panel discussed common mistakes potential employees make as well as resources available to job seekers.

"We have several services available that can help job seekers develop the skills that will make them more attractive to employers," Bloodworth said of the Adult Learning Center. "We can administer tests for the National Work Readiness Credential, which is required for employment at several of the plants in Calvert City; we work with the Marshall County Public Library to provide basic computer classes; and we provide assistance to those who are looking to take the GED exam."

Bloodworth also discussed the upcoming changes to the GED test, which will be completely computerized after December 18. The seven-hour test will then include four subject areas and contain two essays. The test changes are due to the adoption of the Common Core Standards in schools across the United States.

For those looking for current job openings, Sorrels recommended Kentucky's Focus/Career, which not only lists available jobs, but also helps users build a complete and detailed resume. Jones also suggested using snagajob.com, which has listings for entry-level positions in this area.

The panel discussion was part of a new series of informative programs at the Marshall County Public Library @Calvert City called Coffee @Calvert.
