October MC Reads

The Marshall County Public Library will celebrate Teen Read Week October 16-22, 2011. Teens are encouraged to come by the library that week to receive a free piece of candy when they check out a book and place their name into a drawing for a $25 Books-a-Million Gift Card.
“Teens have more activities to fill their free time than ever — web videos, social networking sites, video games, afterschool activities, athletics —and increasingly high expectations in the classroom,” said Tammy Blackwell, Young Adult Librarian. “It’s important we show them that reading is something which can be fun and relaxing. We also want to emphasize to parents how reading for fun can translate into better performance at school.”
Blackwell continues, “Many families have learned to make do with less as a result of the economy and have flocked to the library. Teen Read Week is a great time to make sure teens and their families know about all the free services the library can offer them and to reach out to teens who aren’t regular users and encourage them to come see what they can find here.”
The Marshall County Public Library offers a variety of programs to students in grades 7-12, including after-school programs and a monthly teen writing group. For more information on teen services, contact your local branch of the Marshall County Public Library or visit them online at www.marshallcolibrary.org.

Library Databases Provide Students with Around the Clock Help
It’s the moment every parent dreads. The time when their child comes up to
them at nine o’clock at night and says, “I have to know all about the ancient
Mayans by tomorrow morning.” Sure, the Internet is open 24/7, but how is a
parent or student to know which information is accurate and which is made up by
a bored fourteen year old?
“The Internet is an amazing resource when used wisely,” says Nancy Petty, Branch
Manager at the Marshall County Public Library @Calvert City. “Yet, we all must remember that there is a lot of misinformation that can be found online.
Fortunately for students, the library offers a range of verified educational resources through their website that can be accessed anytime, anywhere.”
The library has a wide array of databases to reach a variety of individual needs, including
several for students. TumbleBooks, PebbleGo, and Capstone offer early readers a chance to explore books and science while sites like Learning Express and the Kentucky Virtual Library offer services for older students.
Petty lauds the Learning Express site. “Learning Express offers so many different services
for students of all ages. There are eCourses for all age ranges, practice tests for those taking everything from the ACT to the GRE to professional certification exams, and basic computer and Internet tutorials.”
To access the library’s databases, visit their website at www.marshallcolibary.org. For
information regarding library card numbers and passwords to access individual
databases, please contact your local branch of the Marshall County Public Library.
