Celebrate Children’s Book Week - May 2-8 at the Marshall County Public Library
Benton, KY – Started in 1919, Children’s Book Week is an annual event to promote children’s books and the importance of reading. This year’s event will be held the first week of May. To celebrate, the Marshall County Public Library will be offering daily book drawings and a weekly grand prize that all children under the age of twelve may enter into when they visit any branch of the library.
“Studies have proven time and time again that developing reading habits as a child significantly influences how well you do in school and in the work place later in life,” says Sarah Pace-McGowan, Children’s Librarian at the Calvert City branch of the Marshall County Public Library. “By reading to your child and encouraging them to read on their own as they get older, you are setting the foundation for their future. Children’s Book Week is an opportunity for families to commit to making books and reading a priority in their home.”
In addition to collections at each branch specifically aimed at early readers, the library also offers an Early Childhood Collection. The collection was purchased through a grant by the Marshall and Graves County Early Childhood Council thanks to the efforts of Greta Henry and Jennifer Washburn, both of whom will be appearing in the Marshall County Reads campaign during the month of April. The collection was developed with teachers and daycares in mind, but is available to all patrons and includes board books, mixed media bags, oversized books, and a selection of lesson plans.
