Library To Host Baby & Me Story Times In March

BENTON, KY – The Marshall County Public Library @Benton will be hosting a series of nighttime programs for children 24 months and younger and their parent or guardian during the month of March.

“Studies show that 35% of children entering Kindergarten lack the basic language skills they need to learn to read,” says Beth Kerrick, Children’s Librarian. “It’s a startling statistic because children who start behind usually never catch up to the standard, many falling further and further behind their peers every year. The key to future academic and career success is introducing literacy ideas as early as possible, including those first few years.”

According to Talk Read Sing, a campaign who counts the American Academy of Pediatrics and Sesame Street Workshop among their many sponsors, 80% of a child’s brain is developed by the age of three. Speaking, singing, and reading to children even before they can talk aides their brain development and prepares them for a literate future.

“This program is going to be all about the fun, simple things you can do every day to help your child grow,” says Kerrick. “We’re going to sing, show books, share words, tell stories, and work with one another to help give our babies all the advantages they need to succeed in today’s world.”

Baby & Me Story Time will be held each Thursday in March from 6-6:30 pm. Class size is limited, so patrons must preregister before the end of February by calling the library at 270-527-9969.
