Express Yourself
Young Adult Summer Reading Program
June 1 - July 31, 2009

Sign-up begins in May
You may sign up any time during the summer

How do I participate?

First, are you going to be in 7th - 12th grade in the Fall?  If yes, keep on reading.  If no, ask about our Children’s Summer Reading Program.

OK, are all those 6th graders gone now?  Good.

So, you want to participate in the YA SRP (Young Adult Summer Reading Program)?  Cool.  All you have to do is sign-up at the circulation desk of your favorite branch of the Marshall County Public Library.  Then work hard to accumulate Points during the months of June & July.  You’ll get lots of cool prizes and a chance to win a $150 Night On The Town Gift Card Collection.

How do I accumulate these Points you speak of?

Easy.  Read a book* or attend a YA event or contribute to our zine or even make your own zine.  So, so many options.  The Point break-down is as follows:

Points:

Book <100 pages:                1 Pt                                  Attend a YA event:      1 Pt

Book 101 - 250 pages:         2 Pt                                  Book review**: 2 Pt

Book 251 - 500 pages:         3 Pt                                   Zine contribution: 5 Pt

Book >500 pages:                 4 Pt.                                Self-made zine: 15 Pt.

*Note: Books must be checked out from the Marshall County Public Library to count.  Audio books must be approved by Miss Tammy.  Children’s picture books do not count, but manga and graphic novels do.

**Book reviews can be posted on Goodreads, but only count if Miss Tammy is made aware of them.  For more book review info go here.

How do I keep track of all these Points?

On your Points Tracker that will be at the Circulation Desk.  Note: It is not the responsibility of the staff to keep up with your Points.  We already sent all the small children away, remember?

How many Points do I have to have to get a prize?

Well, you get one just for signing up.  Then you get another one after 10 Points.  And then another one after 20 Points. And then again at 30 Points.   And you’ll get your name in the Grand Prize Drawing for every 10 Points you earn.  Oh, and you’ll also get a prize if you get the most Points at your branch of the library.  See, lots of prize-winning opportunities!

And what exactly are these prizes you speak of?

Sign-up and get a glow-in-the-dark bouncy ball!

Earn 10 Points and get a stretchy man!

Earn 20 Points and get a zombie finger puppet!

Earn 30 Points and get a free book!

And, for every 10 Points you earn your name gets in the drawing for the GRAND PRIZE:

$150 Night On The Town Gift Card Collection*!

*$40 @ Outback; $40 @ Mall; $40 @ Books a Million; $30 @ Cinemark

Also, the top Points earner at each branch wins a

$25 Mall Gift Certificate!

OK.  I give.  What’s a zine?

Glad you asked.  A zine is a self-published magazine.  A zine can be about absolutely anything from toaster ovens to a manga interpretation of the struggles of the good people of Tibet.  There are currently some zines available for check out in your library.  You should look at them.  They’re cool.

Now, about that whole “zine contribution” and “self-made zine” thing.  By “zine contribution” I mean that you turn in a writing (short story, essay, poem, etc.) or piece of art (drawing, painting, comic, or even a picture of something cool you’ve made) to Miss Tammy (I prefer email submissions, but you can turn in paper copies; just hand them to whoever is working at the Circ Desk) and get 5 Points.  At the end of the summer you will find your contributed piece (or pieces, there is no limit as to how many you can turn in) in a big ol’ zine full of cool stuff from teens.

By “self-made” zine I mean that you make a whole zine on your own (or with a friend).  You must turn in 3 hard copies (as in printed out and bound together) of your zine to Miss Tammy (via whoever is working the Circ Desk).  For this endeavor you get 15 whole Points.  (If you work with a friend you both get 15 Points.)

Each zine contribution and self-made zine must have the name of the contributor/publisher on it.  I will not be checking for spelling or grammar errors.  It’s printed the way you give it to me!

For more information on zines you can visit this page or ask Miss Tammy.

And how would I get in touch with Miss Tammy?

Miss Tammy is easily reached through email (tblackwell@marshallcolibrary.org) or via phone (270.395.5745 or 270.527.9969 on Thursdays).
