Midnight
Pearls by Debbie Viquie
Review by Inkgirl
I love fairytale retellings which
is why I ordered the Once Upon a Time is Timeless series.
Midnight Pearls is a retelling of the little mermaid. Surprisingly,
it is narrated by the Little Mermaid's brother's fiance.
Turned into a human as a child, Pearl grows up with a fisherman and his
wife. She is secretly friends with the prince. When Pearl is
suddenly given an offer of marriage by one who she doesn't love, she hopes
the prince will marry her. To complicate life, Fey (the little
mermaid) saves the prince from a sinking boat and Fey's brother recognizes
Pearl as his long lost fiance. The two turn themselves human (she
giving up her voice and he his sight).
In the end, Pearl is beset by no less than four potential loves, deals
with jealousy, and is stunningly beautiful. The story is very
predictable, shallow, and Mary-Sue. Fine for light reading.
But there are many better books out there. |
