Unwind
by Neal Shusterman
Review by Miss Tammy
Welcome to the future. After The Heartland
Wars, a civil war fought over the issue of abortion, new laws have been
established to "protect" human life. First, any child
conceived must been born and taken care of ("storking" is an
acceptable way to get rid of a newborn that you do not want).
Second, if you no longer want a child during their teen years you can have
them "unwound". This process takes each part of the teen
and uses it in a transplant surgery to help someone else. Since
every part of the teen is still alive - in some manner, in some place - it
isn't considered killing.
Try to explain that to one of the three teens that
are to be unwound. Conner is a "problem" kid whose parents
sign the unwind form to be free of him; Risa is a state home kid who
cannot prove her worthiness; and Lev is a tithe, a child who was born for
the purpose of unwinding. This novel follows their harrowing journey
as they try to escape their fate.
Unwind is an amazing book. It's action-filled,
thought-provoking, and absolutely terrifying. I highly recommend it! |
