Dragonflight is the first book in a series that I have just started to read.  It's about Lessa who is of royal blood, but has been hiding as a kitchen drudge for the past ten years.  She is discovered and instead of taking her rightful place she is asked to come and become teh weyrwoman for all of Pern and help fight the approaching Threads.  Long silvery things that eat all organic matter.
