Children
of the Lamp by PB Kerr
Review by Inkgirl
P. B. Kerr is strange. He
claims that he really wants to write for children, but what he writes is
not appropriate for kids.
Book one, The Akhenaten Adventure, is actually a cute and amusing story.
The premise is that djinn are creatures that look human but aren't.
The djinn blood is passed down through the mother. The djinn powers
are fully realized when a djinn has its wisdom teeth taken out. Book
one is light-hearted and fast paced.
However, book two, The Blue Djinn of Babylon, is the definition of
strange. It was simply weird and unsettling with no rhyme or
reason. Unfortunately, I have never read a book about djinn where
the djinn don't eventually become demons and start possessing people.
Gross.
By book three, The Cobra King of Kathmandu, the books are totally inappropriate
for kids. The bad djinn eat people, villains graphically experience
spontaneous combustion, and-yes- the djinn turn into demons and start
possessing people. Sad really.
P. B. Kerr could have been good; he could have written for kids, but he
didn't. |
