BENTON, KY (November 19, 2012) – State Auditor Adam Edelen’s recently released report on special taxing districts in Kentucky described public libraries as models of transparency and accountability. Edelen specifically cites the work of the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives (KDLA) and the Kentucky Public Library Association (KPLA) in promoting good governance in libraries.

Aug. 6, 2012 - Library Hosts Carnival of Dreams
Benton, KY – The Marshall County Public Library Young Adult program hosted its fifth annual End-of-Summer Mega-Event on Saturday, August 4, at the Benton branch. The program, which was called The Carnival of Dreams", was attended by over 35 students in grades 7-12 and featured a performance by Darshwood the Conjurer.
Aug. 8, 2012 - Over 7,500 Books Read In Summer Reading Program
Benton, KY – Marshall County students in grades K-12 read over 7,500 books in this year's Summer Reading Program at the Marshall County Public Library. More than 350 students participated in the program, which featured a reading challenge, weekly programs, and special events throughout the summer.

Jan. 16, 2013 - Library hosts first 'Lunch and Learn' session: Estate Planning
BENTON – The Marshall County Public Library held their first Lunch & Learn session on Wednesday, January 16, at the Benton branch. The program featured a panel of twelve professionals including Tom Blakenship, Lisa DeRenard, Genia Donley, Bonita Edwards, Marty Johnson, Larry Krouse, George Long, Carla Marshall, Kip Mathis, Judge Jack Telle, and Don Thomas , who spoke on topics related to estate planning. “The Lunch & Learn sessions are designed to offer learning opportunities for adults with busy schedules,” says Ginger Russell, Adult Services Librarian for the Marshall County Public Library. “It’s a casual, come-and-go atmosphere that allows people to stop in on their lunch break. They can come in, grab some lunch, and have a chance to learn about various topics from a panel of experts. We chose estate planning for our first session because we see a lot of interest in that particular area with the patrons who visit our library.”

Feb. 21, 2013 - Bestselling Author Visits With Marshall County Teens
Benton, KY – "Being a professional writer is work," author Samantha Young told a group of Marshall County teens. "Natural talent is good, but working hard is what will make you successful."
Young spoke with members of the Marshall County Public Library’s Orbis de Scriptors, a teen writing group, via Skype on February 20. The teens gathered at the Calvert City branch of the library and were able to see, hear, and even ask questions to the author as she visited with them from her home in Scotland.

Feb. 21, 2013 - Kentucky Public libraries offer books and so much more
FRANKFORT – Kentucky's public libraries are providing new digital services along with books and other items at an unprecedented level, according to statistics compiled by the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives (KDLA) from annual reports submitted by Kentucky's 119 public library systems.
Kentuckians checked out almost 20 million books from public libraries and bookmobiles in addition to more than nine million audio visual items in 2012, while welcoming almost 20 million visitors and serving many more through websites offering a wide range of services.

Mar. 1, 2013 - Library’s 2013 “I Love to Read” Program
March 1, 2013 – On Friday, March 1st, participants from the 10th anniversary year of the "I Love to Read" program came together for a finale party at the Benton Library for games and prizes.
National "I Love to Read" Month is celebrated each February in libraries across the county. Local participants from all three county libraries signed up for a chance to win prizes by recording the amount of books they read during the month of February. Readers, 18 and older, read a total of 5,253 books last month. Benton, Calvert City, and Hardin library staff signed up 614 participants, a new record total this year.

Mar. 28, 2013 - Ancient Greece Comes Alive

Benton, KY - The gods and goddesses of Ancient Greece have been seen roaming around Marshall County over the past few weeks as part of the Marshall County Public Library’s Mount Olympus Live! program.
The program, which was performed by members of the library’s Young Adult Advisory Panel, introduced children to a variety of classic stories, such as the birth of the Greek gods and the cause of the Trojan War, from the point of view of the gods themselves. The show was performed at all three branches of the library as well as Benton Elementary and Central Elementary. Each program featured a different panel of gods and goddesses who provided an improvisational performance and took questions from the audience.
Apr. 17, 2013 - Library Hosts Gardening Workshop
BENTON, KY -- Gardeners and landscapers gathered at the Marshall County Public Library @Benton on April 17 to discuss the upcoming planting season with a panel of experts. Ken Westfall from Holly Nursery; Kelly Canfield, Master Gardener, and Lincoln Martin, County Agriculture Agent, from the Extension Office; and Rhonda Beard were on hand to answer questions and lead the discussion.

CALVERT CITY, KY – Local employers and workforce experts came together at the Marshall County Public Library @Calvert City on Thursday, May 9, to discuss the ins and outs of landing a job.
"When writing a resume, filling out an application, or giving an interview, be honest and be yourself," said Jenny Lee, Human Resources Manager for the Marshall County Hospital. "You might think you're making yourself look better and more employable, but falsifying information is a guaranteed way to not get hired."
